Chain Store Sales
Definition
Monthly sales volumes from individual department, chain, discount, and apparel stores are usually reported on the first Thursday of each month. Chain store sales correspond with roughly 10 percent of retail sales. Chain store sales are an indicator of retail sales and consumer spending trends.  Why Investors Care

Highlights
Chain store sales proved weak again in February but no worse than January, very much like vehicle sales which were unchanged. Wal-Mart may, however, grab headlines with the chain's best results since August, at a total sales gain of 5.8 percent that is more than 1 full percentage point above rivals. But other chains are complaining of weak conditions, especially weak traffic that reflects glum spirits and high gas prices. These results will weigh on share prices of retailers and are likely to set up expectations for another weak retail sales report next Thursday.
