Highlights
Chain stores reported very strong sales in June, a month helped by tax rebates and warm weather and one that looks very much like May -- that is indicating wide month-to-month strength in non-auto categories. Discounters did especially well in the month as consumers convert tax rebates into basic goods. Wal-Mart, as usual, led the group with a stunning 9.9% year-on-year gain in total U.S. sales for its best monthly showing in 2-1/2 years. How long these sales can remain this strong of course is seriously in question as tax rebates phase out over the next month or so. Still, today's reports fill out what has proven to be a very solid quarter for the nation's retailers.
