Highlights
Chain stores reported softer sales in July but spirits in the industry are surprisingly upbeat. The boost from federal tax rebates appears to have come to an end, evident in easing gains for discounters and in what is likely to be sizable month-to-month declines through most categories in next week's retail sales report from the Commerce Department. Yet many chains say inventories are very lean, which is limiting the need for markdowns and is giving a boost to profit margins in the sector.
