Chain Store Sales
Definition
Monthly sales volumes from individual department, chain, discount, and apparel stores are usually reported on the first Thursday of each month. Chain store sales correspond with roughly 10 percent of retail sales. Chain store sales are an indicator of retail sales and consumer spending trends.  Why Investors Care

Highlights
Chain stores reported disappointing sales in August, a month hurt by tropical storms at the beginning of the month and a hurricane at the end. Chains said customers are concentrating on non-discretionary items and pushing back purchases closer to need. Today's results point to a month-to-month decline in the non-auto non-gas category of next week's retail sales report which, however, will benefit from yesterday's very strong month-to-month bounce back in vehicle sales.
