Chain Store Sales
Definition
Monthly sales volumes from individual department, chain, discount, and apparel stores are usually reported on the first Thursday of each month. Chain store sales correspond with roughly 10 percent of retail sales. Chain store sales are an indicator of retail sales and consumer spending trends.  Why Investors Care

Highlights
Retailers reported disappointing sales in September, which together with the steep decline in vehicle sales, point squarely at a third straight month-to-month decline for total retail sales, data to be released next Wednesday. Several discounters, including Wal-Mart, did well in the month but not as well as the prior month. Many more chains reported a significant breakdown in sales including JC Penney where declines are now in the double digits. A run of major retailers, including Saks, cut their estimates and warned that conditions will remain depressed for a significant period. Today's reports are definitely recessionary and will unfortunately not help to lift outlooks or spirits.
