Highlights
Challenger reports a steep decline in layoff announcements in what may be good news for tomorrow's employment report. Layoff announcements totaled 44,416 in December vs. November's 73,140 and a total of 54,643 in December 2006. The report contrasts with the Monster employment report which shows a big dip in online recruiting during December. ADP's report later this morning followed by weekly jobless claims will offer market-moving data on the jobs market.

Trends
|
The Challenger Job-Cut Report could serve as a leading indicator for new jobless claims. However, not all layoff announcements result in near term job losses. For instance, companies often announce layoffs that will result in job losses but not immediately. Companies would simply not replace workers who quit voluntarily. |
